This unusual railway bridge from the 60’s was supposed to be used to let cargo trains cross the river, ensuring a 10% shorter travel time. The construction of the bridge was extremely slow which caused constructions to stop at the end of the 80’s, leaving the bridge unfinished.
Why has the bridge been abandoned?
In addition to the railway bridge, a gigantic viaduct was build in the city center. Even houses were demolished to make space for bridge and the railway. In the late 60’s, a new train station was built especially for this new railroad. Then suddenly, the president of the Italian rail roads decided to move the priority to a different project. This also left an airport unfinished. Then, at the end of the 80’s, the mayor decided to continue the construction of this railroad. Billions were spent to build a new metal bridge but again left unfinished. In the meantime, some of the viaducts are already demolished and have never been used.
The bridge was used as a secret shortcut by agricultural traffic and cyclists. De municipality has now placed fencing around the bridge to prevent people from using it. Now nature has the opportunity to conquer the bridge. Trees grow along the wooden sleepers. For years, there were plans to used the bridge as a crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. Also this resulted in nothing because the regional council has bought the project for the symbolic amount of 1 euro. They want to reuse the bridge as a bicycle route for inhabitants and tourists. Time will tell how this story will end.
